tu me manques

in French, you don’t really say “i miss you.” you say “tu me manques,” which is closer to “you are missing from me.”

i love that. “you are missing from me.” you are a part of me, you are essential to my being. you are like a limb, or an organ, or blood. i cannot function without you.

i saw this on tumblr earlier and all i could think was that this term, to me, means that you could be searching for your soulmate, and they are missing from you. you are looking for the person to complete you. the English, “i miss you,” is directed at a specific person. but in the beautiful French language, it’s referring to that person who has the ability to fulfill your heart. maybe you haven’t found them yet, but that’s the beauty of the term; it works for before and after you’ve found that person to complete you. the one person who will love you unconditionally no matter your past, present, and future. i truly believe there is a person like that for everyone. it just takes time and patience. just be yourself and love will find you.
